About us
The Victorian Pill Testing Service is operated by a consortium of leading harm reduction and healthcare organisations - The Loop Australia, Harm Reduction Victoria, YSAS, Youth Projects, Melbourne Health, and Metabolomics Australia (University of Melbourne).
We analyse the contents of drugs to provide accurate information and personalised harm reduction advice to help people make safer, more informed decisions about drug use.
The service is part of an 18-month implementation trial funded by the Victorian Government. The service includes two formats:
Mobile Services: Also known as ‘pop-ups,’ these are next available at selected festivals and events throughout the state during the summer festival season in 2025/26.
Fixed-Site Service: Based at 95 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, this service provides regular drug checking and harm reduction information for patrons.
The service provides notifications about unexpected high-risk or unknown substances circulating in Victoria through public notifications, so that people are made aware of potential harms before they become widespread. These notifications also feeds into the Department of Health’s statewide drug risk assessment and response process. If the risk is confirmed to have broader public health implications, a public health alert or advisory may be issued by the Department of Health.
The service supports the Victorian Government's health-led approach to reducing drug harms, by contributing to early warning systems, strengthening local health networks and enhancing Victoria's capacity to detect and respond to emerging drug threats.
